I went to a Just Moved! Awareness event recently to share with pastors and women's ministry leaders about our Moving On After Moving In classes and support groups. My purpose was to spread the word and the work of our ministry. As I looked around the room, my eyes were drawn to the face of a young pastor's wife. I had seen those tear-filled eyes hundreds of times before on the faces of women who had moved and were struggling in their transition. I could see the pain behind the tears she fought to keep from over-flowing. I smiled at her and she smiled back, as if to acknowledge our heart connection. I knew I needed to get through my talk, get through the crowd and get to her side.

As soon as I finished speaking, I made my way to her side of the room and quickly sat down, with no introductions--we embraced. She poured out her heart, with her emotions not far behind. She struggled with leaving behind a church home she loved, relationships she held dear, and a community that was so much a part of her daily life. I gently helped her understand that she could not start over in a new place and in a new church, until she began to let go of the past, until she started to cherish what she left behind instead of clinging to it. We talked through her feelings for a long time. I reminded her that God would made a 'roadway in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert' (Isaiah 43:18,l9) in this new place, and to cling to His faithfulness and His word. We prayed together and I sensed the presence of God's calming spirit come over her as we parted.

And then I knew....my being at this event was not about ministry awareness, but about God awareness! God's purpose was for me to touch one life that day with the awareness of His love, His compassion and His comfort!

What are your summer plans? Are the days filled with activities and a fun schedule? Be flexible, my friends. God shows up in the middle of our plans, on an ordinary day, and turns everything around--and you will smile inside, knowing you've had a glimpse of Him at work in you and through you!

What are your favorite money-saving ideas?

When I need to make a larger purchase I will visit Craig’s List for my city. It’s like a giant garage sale that I can shop from the comfort of my own home.

A simple idea to conserve water is to collect the water from rinsing dishes in a large bowl. Use that water to pour down the drain when running the disposer. Another water conservation idea is to shave your legs in the bathroom sink instead of the shower

Rather than buying expensive, pretty boxes for attractive storage, cover empty cardboard containers (tissue boxes, laundry detergent boxes, etc.) with your favorite shelf paper.

If I don’t have to go very far, I’ll ride my bike! I’m saving gas AND getting exercise at the same time!

The Lord Himself Goes Before You
Hello,
I moved from a home I dearly loved where we lived for 12 years. It was the first time in my life that I truly loved where I lived and it felt so like home. I had put down roots and had such a wonderful support system of friendships. I loved my house and garden. We relocated to Oregon and all the hopes I had for our new home resulted in disappointments.

We've been here almost two years now and I still find myself grieving over missing our old home. How can I learn to like a house that I did not choose and don't like. I'm finding that I don't feel comfortable inviting people into my house, because I don't feel good about it. I've read your two books. Please give me some advice and encouragement. Thank you.
Carol in Oregon

Dear Carol,
I know what it's like to leave a house and yard you love and not be happy with the house you live in after moving.

It would be my desire to respond to your situation with an answer that would somehow change your circumstances. Yet I have learned over the years that I do not know all the right answers. I can only lead you to the One who does have all the answers, the One I turn to in my time of need. It is only Jesus Christ that can soothe me with comfort and peace.

I hope that you will make the choice to live above your circumstances for your own well-being and for your family. I have found that my happiness comes from within, not from the things around me. In times such as this, I try to focus less on my circumstances of discontentment and more on being content in Christ. I hope that you will find your answers in His word. It is in His word that I take refuge. Abide in Him, trust Him and seek Him with all your heart.

Philippians 4:11-12 - Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am...
Your friend in Christ, Susan

The shadow by my finger cast
Divides the future from the past.
Behind its unreturning line,
The vanished hour, no longer thine.

Before it lies the unknown hour,
In darkness and beyond thine power.
One hour alone is in thine hands,
The now on which the shadow stands.

A poem inscribed on a sundial at Wellesley College:

Isn't that lovely?
What will you do with the now on which YOUR shadow stands?
