The theme for this month on "change" seems so appropriate for January. A new year will invariably bring some kind of change to our lives. Change can be welcomed, anticipated, expected, unexpected, fearful, painful, abrupt, embraced, rejected and life-altering. Change can also be an opportunity to grow personally and spiritually. I was reminded not long ago through the actions of my four year old granddaughter, Morgan, what it takes to refocus in the midst of changing circumstances. It certainly was a faith lesson to me.

Morgan was strapped in her car seat, gazing out the window, as she sat behind Ann, my daughter-in-law, and me in the car. We were on our way to pick up her sister, Mackenzie, after school. I always love riding along on school pick-up days when I'm in Atlanta. It is catch-up time for Ann and me, and we are usually talking non-stop! Ann was telling me all the details about the major, traumatic surgery that the beloved little dog who lived next door to them was having. We were of course in deep and engaging conversation, when all of a sudden, Morgan, who was obviously listening very intently, said in a loud, confidant voice, "Well, we're just going to have to stop right now and pray for Dapple!" I turned and looked in the back seat as I saw her, without any hesitation, instantly bow her head, fold her hands, close her eyes and start to pray -- "Dear God, please take care of Dapple and make him all well. Ahhhmen." (The amen was said so profoundly, as if that's what it would take to send her prayer on to God!)

I will always have that moment imprinted in my mind and in my heart. In the midst of change for little Dapple who was undergoing major surgery, Morgan did what all of us need to remember to do when our life changes--she stopped and prayed! Why don't I do that? Why do I wrestle with the whys and hows and if onlys, and then try to handle things on my own--instead of just instantly releasing it to God? Oh the lessons we learn from our children and grandchildren! (..and a little child shall lead them. Isaiah 11:6) Just stop and pray, Susan! Just stop and pray, my dear moving friends! Whatever changes you might face or be facing this year, STOP--don't hesitate for a moment, instantly bow your head, fold your hands, close your eyes--AND PRAY!

God is waiting for us to come to Him in our need of Him. Sometimes we just need to be gently reminded of what we already know to help us refocus for the new year. Thank you, Morgan!

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness... - II Corinthians 12:9

A God of Surprises
I love your book and this class! After being single for almost 23 years and teaching English in Hong Kong and then living in paradise on the island of Crete, God brought a Texas boy into my life and we got married. FORT WORTH, TEXAS! Oh my, did I have some culture shock! His family in Texas, mine in Oklahoma and NO SEA to swim in! Malls instead of markets, grocery stores instead of Saturday fresh veggies - I hated it!

But God is ALWAYS full of surprises. We now live in Abu Dhabi, UAE and I am SO HAPPY! Oh boy did I have boxes! And I have a villa with SEVEN FLOORS - the stairs are most...interesting! We are making friends of our own, have a glorious church and home.  I feel like I'm on a perpetual honeymoon!

A God Who is Faithful
I would like to say thank you for your ministry. Debbie and I have moved around the world with the Air Force for the past 20 years. While I was always excited about the new and "better" job, Debbie rarely shared my enthusiasm. It meant that she had to re-establish routines and friendships that took time to grow, and that new process would require time and effort that was emotionally draining. God was always sovereign and we found ourselves surrounded by incredible friends and developed lifelong memories.

Debbie is getting a chance to share about God's faithfulness during our many moves to women that are struggling with the process. Your book has proved to be an outstanding tool and resource, to help the women she spends time with, in making the rough spots smooth during a difficult time of transition. Debbie has also gotten a lot of useful things from it and she can identify with much of what you talk about. Debbie tells me about numerous women who have had very difficult moving experiences. The fellowship that she shares with them and the use of After the Boxes are Unpacked has made the transition not seem quite as bad. God is an incredible God and He is faithful to take care of His own. I am grateful that he uses us to take care of each other. Thank you for your faithfulness to His calling in your life. I'm sure that you will never know all that God is doing as a result of your obedience to His calling.

Napa Salad
This is a great salad for those of us who are
cutting back to get in shape after holiday feasting!

Salad:
1 pkg. Ramen noodles (smash noodles in pieces)
1/2 bottle sesame seeds
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1 head lettuce (or combination: bibb, romaine, etc.)
1 small can Mandarin Oranges (I use more)
1 bunch sliced green onions (I use 3)

Dressing:
1/2 cup Crisco oil
1/3 cup sugar
3 tbsp. vinegar (I like the cider vinegar for this)
1/2 tsp. salt

Salad: Break up the Ramen noodles into pieces and place on a cookie sheet. Discard the Ramen seasoning packet. In oven, on low broil, toast noodles. Add sesame seeds and almonds to noodles and continue under low broil until lightly toasted. Watch carefully as almonds burn easily! This can be toasted ahead of time and stored in a container.

In serving bowl, combine torn up lettuce, oranges and onions. Add toasted noodle mixture. Serve with dressing.
Dressing: shake well in a container

The Will Of God...According To His Word

The will of God will never take you,
Where the grace of God cannot keep you,
Where the arms of God cannot support you,
Where the riches of God cannot supply your needs,
Where the power of God cannot endow you. The will of God will never take you,
Where the Spirit of God cannot work through you,
Where the wisdom of God cannot teach you,
Where the army of God cannot protect you,
Where the hands of God cannot mold you. The will of God will never take you,
Where the love of God cannot enfold you,
Where the mercies of God cannot sustain you,
Where the peace of God cannot calm your fears,
Where the authority of God cannot overrule for you. The will of God will never take you,
Where the comfort of God cannot dry your tears,
Where the Word of God cannot feed you,
Where the miracles of God cannot be done for you,
Where the omnipresence of God cannot find you. Everything happens for a purpose.
We may not see the wisdom of it all now,
but trust and believe in the Lord
that everything is for the best.
