We are all in the middle of the summer by now, some of us feeling the hot temperature more than others. (It’s 115 degrees in Phoenix today!) Many of you are scattered as you visit family and friends, are on vacation, or are just taking some time off to have some fun--which brings me to a summer story I want to share with you.

Our daughter, her husband, and their four children (ages two, three, five and six) drove over to California a few weeks ago for a family trip to Disneyland. Of course they were there from opening to closing each day, cramming in everything possible, not wanting to miss a single ride, show, or event!

I remember my parting words to my daughter, Ginger, as I told them goodbye — ' Don’t take your eyes off the children. There are so many people there, please be extra careful and watch them at all times.' (Words that she is accustomed to hearing from her mother!)

On their last night, they stayed late to watch the big closing parade along with thousands of other people. Our son-in-law, James, had the two little ones in a stroller while Ginger held the hands of Austin and Savannah. When the parade was barely over, She told James to hold Savannah’s hand and wait while she and Austin quickly crossed the street. They ran across as the emerging crowd surrounded and rushed past them for the park exits. Ginger looked back and saw a frightened look on James’ face as he yelled across the noise of this crowd, 'S-a-v-a-n-n-a-h!' Savannah was caught up in the mass of people exiting the park. She had broken away from her father to follow her mom! There was nothing James could do with two toddlers in a stroller. He was immobile in the crowd. Ginger could not see Savannah as she was tucked away inside a moving mob of adults.

The crowd emptied the area almost as fast as they had filled it. Ginger ran to get help from security. James pushed through the remaining people; calling out to Savannah, while her siblings started crying as they sensed their sister was lost. After frantically searching for twenty of the longest minutes they had ever experienced, Savannah was spotted, crying hysterically and sitting on the curb near the entrance gate with park security forming a tight circle of protection around her. The whole family ran to her and scooped her up in their arms as they all began to weep with joy and relief that Savannah had been found.

As Ginger re-lived that story with me, the vision of a 'circle of protection' around Savannah became so vivid in my mind. God had protected her! I could just see Him providing a circle of angels around her to keep her safe from harm. May we never forget that He does the same for us, and for our families, every day. Sometimes we are so aware of His grace and protection. Other times, unknown to us, He just steps into a situation when we are out of control and we walk away feeling His presence. Ginger and James walked away from Disneyland that night feeling the presence of God.

Be safe, my friends! I am praying for a circle of protection around you and your family as you come and go this summer. And, from a grandmother’s heart - 'Keep a watchful eye on your children!'

Choose To Move Ahead
My focus on Christ has been renewed! I have some perspective on my life, some understanding of why I am feeling what I am feeling. I have been given a toolbox full of the specific tools I need to get me back in tune with God, and to stay that way!

Donna, your move to Arizona has not been easy for you, but your heart for Christ, your testimony to God’s faithfulness, and your willingness to volunteer for Just Moved!, have been a blessing to us all. )

God Goes Before You
So grateful to know about all of you! Once again, this ministry will be my aid in a time of change.
Gayla in Missouri
aa( God goes before you and will walk with you through this move, Gayla. Blessings to you and your family. )

Trust God With The Details
I am calm, but I get hit by a wave of sadness from time to time. I tell myself, “This is OK. It’s normal. Feel it, but don’t get stuck in it.” I have always reminded myself that good-byes and endings are only painful because of the blessings that have preceded them. Then my sadness is mixed with genuine gratefulness and I am reminded of God’s goodness and faithfulness. Thank you for keeping us in your prayers!!
Renee in Kansas
aa( You’re so right, Renee. So often good-byes and endings are painful because of the loving relationships and special memories associated with them. Thank God for those relationships and memories; cherish them and trust Him to have more in store for you where you are going. )

Lingering and Longing
by Susan Bagley

I'm lingering too long because I do not want to say goodbye.
One more look around, breathing deeply, so as not to cry.

I smell the honeysuckle's heady perfume
and see through the tall pines, the silvery Carolina moon.
As if the years and seasons kaleidoscope before my eyes
Out of pure longing, I fantasize.

The blueberries ripe and kissed with morning's dew
My dad and I picking and eating a few.
Mother in sun bonnet bent over the butterbean row,
My Daddy in overalls weeding the garden with a hoe.

Clean clothes gently swaying on the clothesline
Crisp and dry smelling of sunshine
The trees heavy with peaches and
Frosty scuppernong grapes on the vine.

Gardens of gladiolas and dahlias, impatiens and mums
apples, pumpkins, persimmons and plums.
Rows of tomatoes, okra and corn
a car rounding the dirt road blowing the horn.

I hear the front porch swing with its familiar squeak
and my heart stops beating, I cannot speak.
How can I leave this? Say goodbye?
To Mother and Dad, to home,
Tears fill my eyes.

The smells the colors the tastes the sounds
where else on earth can these be found?
The rusty birdbath, pink Dogwoods in bloom
wind chimes playing springtime tunes?

I look back as I put the car into drive
and it's as if they're not gone, but very alive.
They stand in the carport waving goodbye.
As always as I am leaving, I smile and I cry.
This longing to linger is greater than I.

I turn and they are gone, it was all in my mind
Where the memories will stay with my heart keeping time.
I drive away slowly, hearing crickets and frogs
A little rabbit runs from under a log.
I round the familiar corner
take a deep breath and a sigh
I honk the horn twice
and say my last goodbye.
