'Do what, Abraham? Go where? How far is it? How long will it take? What about our home, our friends?' We can only imagine the many questions that raced through Sarah’s mind, and the clutched feelings in her heart when Abraham broke the news that they were moving. She had probably never really thought about actually moving! After all, Abraham was successful in his home city of Ur. They probably had a nice home and financial security, by the standards of that time in history. We can picture Sarah having a 'tent sale' and selling everything that couldn’t fit in a pack and on a camel. We can envision her giving her fine silk garments to friends, and cherished heirlooms to family members. She likely gave flowers and vegetables from her garden to her neighbors. Their family and friends probably gave them a farewell party. I’m sure there was laughter, and tears, and lots of hugs; and then Sarah and Abraham were gone, swallowed up in a cloud of dust from their caravan.
We can almost feel Sarah’s heart wrenching as she left her beloved home for an unknown place. Being torn emotionally between staying and leaving is something many of us have felt when faced with moving. She went with Abraham out of love, commitment, and obedience to him; but it was her deep faith and trust in God that sustained her and carried her through each obstacle, disappointment, and crisis. Like many of us, I’m sure Sarah learned a lot about herself and God from moving. She discovered that her security came from trusting God for an unknown future, not in what she left behind. She found that God moved her from a place of comfort to a place of spiritual growth and faith in His promises. She learned not to hold on to things too tightly in order to embrace what God had planned for her.
Never lose hope in what God is capable of doing through this transition in your life. It’s in that moment of complete surrender and trust, when you truly let go and let God take over, that your life will take a new direction and you can face the journey ahead.
