The Prayer Bowl

Invite God to guide you as you pray for others

by Polly Wick

I keep a small, hand-painted bowl filled with names of friends and family in my corner at the breakfast table. I pray over this little stack of names held in my hand and ask that our Lord deliver the name for the day. Some names are well worn. Over and over they are chosen. The interaction is intimate and personal.

This morning, I shuffled and touched upon sister Marsha’s card. Lord, how sweet that you chose her today. Her name card is soft and tattered. Tomorrow, marks one year since her son, my nephew, Nils died. He fought a 10-year battle with cancer.

I love this sweet morning ritual with You, Lord. Sometimes I wonder, is it You? Are you guiding my fingers? Why should I doubt? The names in this bowl are loved and known to both of us. These names carry stories and needs. They call for specific prayer. My prayers are limited. But You know, Holy Spirit, just how to intercede. Your will, Your way. I pray for salvation, health, relationships, and comfort. You fill in the gaps.

Today, Lord, I’ll hold Marsha close. I know You will too. In Jesus name.

Polly, this is so inspiring and touching. And convicting as well. Thank you for sharing. Your willingness to share this story may encourage many of us to intercede for others in prayer more intentionally and regularly. Thank you again for your courage and for you heart.
