Anchor in the Midst of Change
After the boxes are unpacked
by Jessica Taylor
When I moved to Dallas, TX in 2011 for my husband’s job, I stumbled upon After the Boxes Are Unpacked book at a library while adjusting to a new culture — navigating changes in work, spiritual life, and transitioning from East Coast living to Southern life. I was also facing the challenges of a lack of diversity, building new friendships, and learning to embrace new experiences.
The book became a powerful anchor guide during that time.
It helped me see how God could use my transition as an opportunity to experience His goodness and draw closer to Him.
Fast forward to another move in 2021 — from Ohio to North Carolina for my job.
I chose to join a virtual After the Boxes Are Unpacked study group in 2023. Though the women were spread across different states and in various life stages, it was the first time I truly felt safe, seen, and understood as I worked through the challenges of a difficult transition.
Now, still working through the transition, I realize just how deeply impactful it is to have a safe, faith-based community where we can explore transition together, stay connected to God, and find practical ways to build community.
