One Thing
by Tracy Steel, former military spouse

Like many other women, I married a military man who served God by serving his country. While moving every 2-3 years provided new scenery and a new home to enjoy, finding a new church or the nearest Target store was tiring. Loneliness happened. I longed to settle and “put down roots.”
Psalm 27:4 says:
“One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life…”
If you read through the entire 27th Psalm, you will notice that David believed God would deliver him from his enemies.
While I did not have physical enemies pursuing me as David did, my enemies were an emotional kind. Their names: anxiety and loneliness. As the moving boxes were unpacked, these emotions tried to move into my new home also.
Though I am no longer uprooted by military moves, Psalm 27:4 will always be precious to me. It still reminds me to refocus on the “one thing” I need to seek: God’s presence. In Him I no longer feel uprooted but safe and secure. Jesus died for me so I can settle and “put down roots” in His presence for all of eternity.
Like David, I am confident that God will protect me from my enemies. Whenever I move or experience a major life change, I aspire to abide in the presence of the Immovable.
Fellow mover, I encourage you to do the same – the necessity of finding the nearest Target store awaits.
Thank you, Tracy and Just Moved,

Amen Tracy!! Love this…God presence!!
Great testimony that many of us can relate to. I especially connected to the 2 emotional enemies which are an awesome picture in Psalm 27.
Thank you, Tracy!
Thank you, Cindy, for sharing about your experiences too! Am grateful to God for how we can battle against these enemies together in community such as Just Moved! May God’s comfort and peace fill you today!
