15 Ways to Make New Friends
We polled the staff and volunteers of Just Moved Ministry and asked for their best ideas for making friends in a new place. You can’t go wrong with these suggestions!
- Find a church and get plugged in to a small group or Bible study.
- Volunteer in the area of your interests. You’ll meet others with similar interests.
- Invite the neighborhood over for pancakes.
- Get your kids involved in activities. You’ll meet other parents.
- Join a gym or an exercise class. Not only will you feel better by staying fit, you’ll meet others!
- You’re wondering why in the world you moved some of that stuff to your new home! Have a garage sale. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors. (Be sure you check any HOA rules first.)
- Find out what events and opportunities are offered at your local library. A book club is an especially good way to begin to meet others. There isn’t a book club? Start one!
- Smile and be friendly. (Even if you have to fake it.)
- Join or start an After the Boxes Are Unpacked study group. This is the best way to meet other women who are also new to the community. (Click here to learn more or call us at 480-991-5268)
- Join a class at the local hobby or craft store.
- Invite someone to meet for lunch or coffee.
- Ask questions of your neighbors, people at church, and the employees in the businesses you frequent. Most people love to be of help.
- Volunteer at your children’s school.
- Say yes to invitations and opportunities. Even if you’re nervous or feel shy, step out! You’ll be glad you did. There’s something about walking a dog that says, “Talk to me.” Try it! Take your dog (or borrow one!) to the park and you’ll be surprised how many people stop to talk to your dog AND you!
